Mucocele of the appendix

  • If the lumen of appendix slowly become completely occluded, usually by a fibrous stricture and pent-up secretion (mucus) remain sterile mucocele result, if infection supervenes, an empyema results.
  • Appendix enlarges several times in its size and present as appendicitis or as a painless mass.
  • Perforation may results in pseudomyxoma peritonei
  • Appendicectomy is curative if the lesion is benign but in cases of neoplastic lesions (cystadenoma and cystadenocarcinoma) may be cause of mucocele, right hemicolectomy is indicated.
